Tatiana Shubin will guide the San Francisco Math Circle (SFMC) Teachers' Circle in a Parity Party. Shubin was born and grew up in the USSR. As an eighth grader she attended a specialized physics and mathematics boarding school in Siberia. Her experience interacting with working mathematicians kindled her passion for the subject and was very influential in her later choice to embark upon an academic career. Upon arriving in the United States, Shubin earned her Ph.D. from University of California, Santa Barbara and joined the faculty of San Jose State University in 1985. Early in 1998, Shubin and Tom Davia heard a presentation by Zvezdelina Stankova on the math circles Stankova had attended as a child in Bulgaria. She proposed that individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area launch circles in their communities as well. This idea resonated with both Davia and Shubin, who felt that there now existed a critical mass of like-minded people to make the endeavor a success. The San Jose Circle has been operating ever since. Since starting the San Jose Circle, Shubin has continued to be involved as a leader in the Math Circle movement, as a founding director of the first Math Teachers Circle' started at the American Institute of Mathematics in 2006 and editor of the AMS/ MAA Math Circle Library. Most recently, Shubin has used her experiences from these Circles to support the creation of the Navajo National Math Circle. SFMC supports Bay Area Teachers in their Mathematical Exploration. Currently we are sponsoring monthly dinners, just for teachers, with a special Math Circle speaker. This program supports the growing professional learning community built off the strong foundations of the SFMC. To ensure enough food, please register to attend!
