Samuel Otter will discuss questions of form in the novel -- the relationship between parts and whole, the concrete and the abstract, the external and the inherent -- and the ways in which Herman Melville ties interpretive questions about form to the features of his text.
Otter is professor of English at University of California, Berkeley, and a specialist in the literature of the U.S. and works of Melville.
