A historic encounter will take place on Nov. 3 in San Francisco, for the LGBT and other communities, when Mavi Susel, the first person in Cuba to receive a sex-change operation, will visit San Francisco for the U.S. premiere of the documentary based on her life. The film, "In the Wrong Body," was produced in 2010 by Cuban award-winning filmmaker, Marilyn Solaya, who will accompany Ms. Susel for the debut. It is in Spanish with English subtitles "En El Cuerpo Equivocado." The documentary is a moving portrayal of Mavi's life. Mavi Susel has had to endure discrimination and abuse, but she courageously pursued her dream of realizing a reassignment surgery, the first to be performed in Cuba, in 1988. The growing national discussion in Cuba promoting inclusion and respect for diversity has been led by Cuba's National Sex Education Center (CENESEX). Below you'll find a link to the CENESEX website (in Spanish only), as well as an inspiring speech given earlier this year by Mariela Castro, director of CENESEX, on Cuba's Day Against Homophobia.
